This past March I spent a week travelling around Lake Superior. It happened to be the exact same week I had been up there in 2013, in fact this shot of the night sky was done on the same night 3 years after I had done a similar shot. This time though I was doing a series of time-lapse images of the night sky as part of my project for The Sweetwater Seas – A Documentary About North America’s Great Lakes. In 2013 there was snow and ice with temperatures below 0°F and the lake frozen over with ice. This year it was between 20-35°F and the ice was almost none existent. However, knowing the ice wouldn’t be there, I still wanted to travel around the lake and was hoping to get a few nice time-lapse of the night sky along with time-lapse of clouds and any other subject which drew me in. On a trip like this you hope to come back with at least one good set of images. I was lucky enough to exceed my expectations even though some things didn’t go the way I had hoped. I had only one clear night. I spent hours on the beach at Split Rock State Park in Minnesota shooting the night sky with wolves howling in the distance. It was a beautiful night and morning. For those who don’t know much about time-lapse, first you need to know your frame rate, how long you want the clip to be and then do the computations to figure out how many shots you need over what time period. In the case of these I did a 15 second exposure with 3 seconds in between. So to get 13 seconds of video it took almost 2 hours of shooting. Not a bad way to spend your night…
2015 Quiet Light Workshops
I am pleased to announce the Quiet Light Workshop schedule for 2015 with three workshops I will be leading, two in Great Smoky Mountains National Park and one in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore along Lake Superior!
Quiet Light Workshops offer Photography Workshops focused on nature & landscapes, travel and trips to some of the best places in the world. Geared to the amateur and advanced amateur photographer looking for the chance to learn from experts in the field. Our photo workshops are designed to take you to some of the best landscapes in the world. During each workshop you will have ample time both in the field and in the classroom to hone your skills with your camera and in the digital world of photography today. Learn tips on Photoshop and converting your images into great looking prints, workflow management, color balances and color calibration to get consistent results in your work.
These are hands-on, in the field workshops with Richard. You will be in surroundings that get your creative juices flowing and will serve as a wonderful photographic classroom. At the end of the day, images will be reviewed and discussed as a group. Techniques will be shared and Richard will work with each of you to improve upon what you’ve shot. The take-away from this workshop will be a better knowledge of how to make your equipment work to the best of its ability, a new understanding of composition, lighting, filters, etc. and a plethora of tips to make your images get the “wow” response.

A Busy Start to the Year
SPEX Art+Vision Show, GSMNP Book Reprinted, Updated Websites, Workshop Dates
It has been a busy year so far in 2013 with the opening of the SPEX Arts+Vision show with Jill Buckner as part of the TWO PHOTOGRAPHERS | ONE VISON project (www.twophotographers-onevision.com) encompassing our images from Italy and Morocco. When you have roughly 30 images framed for a gallery show it takes a lot of work to edit and print each one before framing and hanging the show. The show will be at the SPEX on Central Street in Evanston through February. If you are in the area you should stop by and check it out.
In addition, my book Great Smoky Mountains National Park: Thirty Years of American Landscapes is now being reprinted as we will soon be out of stock if we don’t! Part of this process is deciding if there should be any changes before you roll the presses. In this case we had to update the signature page with the updated info, change a Photoshop error on one of the images, and update the current Quiet Light Publishing book list to the final page in the book. We also added four of the best book awards, out of the dozen the book won, to the back of the dust jacket. The book went on press yesterday.
We also released the Quiet Light Workshop schedule for 2013 and updated some of those trips. More on all of that later. Check our websites for the updates. And speaking of websites both the Quiet Light Publishing ( www.quietlightpublishing.com ) and Richard Mack Photography (www.mackphoto.com) websites have been updated with new images and projects!
So the year starts off with a bang and next month will be the same as I get back to working on my next book Twenty/Ninety-Five part of the Great Lakes Project (www.quietlightpublishing.com/GLP.php) with a trip to Lake Superior to capture images of the ice and snow. This is a shortened trip from the one I was supposed to make the first three weeks of March. Will feel great to get back to this project! Stay tuned for updates!
