Treasures of Morocco: A Sensuous Feast of Color

Join us for a uniquely exotic evening that will senses! A “taste of Morocco”.

OPENING NIGHT: Friday, November 9th 5:30-9:00 at Ysla Gallery in Wilmette.

What may have started as a mild competition while we were on assignment in Italy and Morocco became inspirational and synergistic. We were quite excited about the passion and energy which was unleashed.

It is seldom two photographers can work this seamlessly together and create one body of work with cohesiveness such as this. In some instances we do not know who shot one image or the other. Therefore in these collections, we will both sign each print. We travelled to Italy to capture the beauty of Tuscany, Florence and Venice. In Morocco we photographed in Casablanca, Marrakech and a small part of the countryside. The trip to Morocco was driven by the possibility of a book whose working title is Treasures of Morocco: A Sensual Feast of Color.

Gallery Show Buckner & Mack

With less than three weeks to go until the opening I have a lot of work to do printing each image we’ve selected for the show and then getting them into the frames. Jill is in Atlanta on a few shoots for the next week which gives me the chance to concentrate on getting the prints done so we can both sign each one and then frame them.  I know we shall have everything ready by the opening but right now all you see is work as you only want the finest prints – which do take time. A print comes off the printer and you look at it with a critical eye and decide if any changes need to be made. No matter how calibrated your system is, it is much like being in the darkroom in the way you work with a print after it “develops”. Yet it is also one of the most exciting parts of being a photographer – bringing your vision into print so everyone can see your way of seeing the world. Your perspective, or in this case, our perspective!

We hope you will all come to the opening – it shall be a great night about our trip to Morocco!

Lighthouse Beach Poster now available!

If it is summer in Evanston it means hitting the beach! And to commemorate this you can now get my new poster of 15 images from Lighthouse Beach. These images were done over a number of years as part of the Great Lakes Project and show’s the moods of all four seasons.

As part of this project I have spent a lot of time at Lighthouse Beach for many reasons. One, I live about a mile away and have been going to this beach since I was a kid. So for me there is a lot of emotional connection to this beach. It is where I have played as a kid, played with my kids and spent many hours alone looking out over the water. And for the last 30+ years have seen it through a photographer’s eye. The old pier, just to the north of the beach has provided many opportunities for images. Sometimes I am there at dusk alone, other times I might join another photographer or two shooting there as well. It has become a popular spot.

If you’ve been following this blog you know I have been trying to get a shot of the full moonrise with the pier in the frame. To date it has eluded me. Someday I shall prevail, I hope, and get the shot – which is so perfect in my head. Stay tuned.

In the meantime if you are a fan of the beaches around Chicago, and especially in Evanston or even Lighthouse Beach then you need this poster! Purchase it online at http://www.quietlightpublishing.com/ for only $45.00! The poster is 24”x36” and is printed on archival paper – the same as my fine art prints.

Enjoy!

A New Gallery Show…Starbucks Tries Something New

Diane Soubly of Have Art is trying something a little different with Starbucks stores here in the Chicago area. She has started a pilot program to bring local artists into Starbucks stores. Now I know a lot of you are thinking, well, local coffee shops have been doing that forever! Yes, they have, and now Starbucks may be joining in that local flavor and making some stores at least a little bit less corporate looking and a little more friendly and community oriented. I think it is a great idea…but then I would. My work is currently being shown at a Chicago Starbucks at 2320 Roscoe (near Damen and Roscoe) through the month of October. The work consists of prints from each of my two books, The Lewis & Clark Trail American Landscapes and Great Smoky Mountains National Park: Thirty Years of American Landscapes. There will be an Artist Reception on October 21st from 5-8pm. I hope if you are in the Chicago area you will stop by for some coffee, some art, and maybe even buy one of my books. By the way Diane helped to curate and hang the show – that’s what she does.

If you’d like to see some of the prints or books which are on display you can check out what I offer at Quiet Light Publishing. There you can preview the books and prints!

Hope to see you on the 21st! And who knows, I bet I hang around the coffee shop occasionally just to watch folks interact with the work. See you there!

Peace,

Richard

Quiet Light Publishing eNewsletter December 2007

Well we posted and sent out the Quiet Light Publishing eNewsletter for December 2007 and it seems the coding in the header, or something like that, was done in such a way it stripped out most of the formatting for many folks. So here is a link to the eNewsletter on our website for those interested. www.quietlightpublishing.com/newsletters/20071205.html If you would like to be included in future issues of the newsletter just drop me a line with the words Newsletter in the subject and let us know you’d like to be included. There is also a way to sign-up for it on the Quiet Light website.

In the newsletter I talked about how we now have many images online in the Gallery section, both from the Lewis & Clark Trail AMERICAN LANDSCAPES book and one I am currently working on based on 30 years of photography in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. You can view the images online at our Gallery – www.quietlightpublishing.com/shop/Gallery.htm.

I also have several Triptych’s available. It is a format which is very interesting to produce, because it takes some time to find three images which are great together. But the results are a very stunning pieces. They’ve been placed in homes, offices and public spaces all over. It is always a thrill to see them displayed somewhere.I hope you’ll enjoy the eNewsletter and check out our Gallery Pages!

Peace,
Richard
