Wednesday, January 5th - Day 22 at The Stinhour Press
Photography has been compared by many to music. With the negative being the musical score and the final print being the symphony, or maybe a jazz piece depending on the composer. While I like that analogy, it also seems that what we make is only part of the process when the final product is a book. If you read each photograph you can see the indiviual notes in the image that make up that measure of music. Each page becomes a melody and each spread a movement. At some point I was happy enough with the music I had made to hand it off to the designers, Rudi and Rich, and let them help to form the final score and then it was time to release the symphony to the hands of other musicians. Some musicians play well enough but, some are extraordinary.
The people at The Stinehour Press make exquisite music. I wandered back into the press room to record the tools of their trade. Some might see it as a place of industry, I see it as a place where artists use the tools they need to make art.

There is a dance in the pressroom as people move around in a fluid space. Paper moving from here to there, presses churning away in the percussions of a musical score, while pressman keep them running smoothly and go about their tasks in perfect harmony. All the time while checking the press sheets to make sure they are still running perfectly. It is always fun to watch people who do their jobs well and move about seamlessly.

So today's update shows you the tools these artists use and how they use them. Enjoy.

You've heard us talk about making color adjustments during a press sheet ok, well, this is where the changes are made. Each of these controls changes the amount of ink on the sheet in 1" increments. The sheet is always in the same place on the table so when we say we want less cyan in this area he can visually see where it should be - exactly.
