January 4th - Day 21 at The Stinehour Press in Vermont
Today was another gray day in Vermont with a bit more rain and snow showers off and on. But that did not dampen our spirits as we continued on with the printing of The Lewis & Clark Trail American Landscapes book - did you know it is being published by Quiet Light Publishing and will be available by March 1st online at www.quietlightpublishing.com or at your favorite bookstore? Hey there is also a link on the first page to order the book - but then you knew that didn't you...
Yesterday we noticed, but forgot to show you the note on the bulletin board which the folks at Stinehour tacked up after Marti the mini-moose jumped in front of our car at the end of our last session...it may be true...
Sign reads: Another example of the affects the North Country can have on nonnatives. A condition known as Northeast Kingdom Dementia. We hope he can recover.
Right away Kevin had a press sheet for us to OK, which we did with only 2 moves of color on the press. Very impressive! Then we went into the design area and Rich worked with Darlene on a change to the layout files, after making Jen laugh.
They also had more blues for us to check, the last step before the plate making process and the final opportunity to make any changes, corrections, or catch any dust spots which may have sneaked in...
Back in "the Office" Terri brought in a piece of shroom art, a mushroom onto which her husband carved this wonderful moose image (moose again!). This mushroom was about 10 years old, based on the layer count we did. Dennis popped his head in as we were inspecting the artwork.
Today we made the final scan of an image for the book. The process, done on a Linotype 3000 drum scanner is to put the film between to optically pure pieces of acetate with a few drops of oil to remove any imperfections.
Focusing is done onto the film in 1/100ths of a millimeter. Accuracy is a must. John had me try my hand at focusing, I was off from him by 0.06 on the first try and we both came up with 75.11mm on the second attempt.

Marti the mini-moose snuck in to see what was going on as well. We usually keep him away from the operations.

John then does his magic with various adjustments to the correct colors and a scan is made. Darlene was looking on along with some famous moose guy.
Finally the day was done and we have just 11 more press runs to make on this project. Another fine day here.
