The Annular Solar Eclipse 2021

This morning’s sunrise and the end of the “Ring of Fire” solar eclipse from Lighthouse Beach in Evanston. It was a beautiful morning to watch nature once again remind us how cool it is. This video was done over the 38 minutes of the end of the eclipse as the moon slipped by the edge of the sun. I compress it down to two minutes.

For those interested it was shot on a Canon 5D IV with the Canon 300mm lens with a 2x convertor making it 600mm. As the sun and moon drifted out of the top of the frame I would move the camera so there are several sequences. A 15 stop ND Filter was used once above the lake and in the sky only.

Enjoy!

Vernal Equinox Sunrise 2021

My birthday is always either the last day of winter or more often the first day of spring – the vernal equinox. So this year I decided to go on down to my favorite beach on Lake Michigan and capture the sun rising on this first spring morning. I had one camera set up for a low wide angle time-lapse and 4K video with a 600mm lens. Once you have captured the sunrise you have some time to shoot a few other shots to use. You can never have enough shots to use!

The time-lapse camera was using Timelapse+ app which does a great job of changing the exposures smoothly when combined with its software and Lightroom to make final adjustments for a smooth transition seamless. Both camera’s are Canon 5D Mark IV’s the wide angle lens is the 16-35mm. The 600 lens was a combination of the Canon 300 and the 2x convertor. OK, enough geekdome. Enjoy! Richard

Grosse Point Lighthouse Documentary

While we are still filming and editing the documentary The Sweetwater Seas – North America’s Great Lakes, we were asked by the Lighthouse Park District in Evanston to produce a short introductory film about the Grosse Point Lighthouse.

Because we live in Evanston and grew up on Lighthouse Beach, we were delighted to take on this project and help people know this amazing National Landmark. In these times of Covid-19, the Grosse Point Lighthouse has been closed to visitors, as is the case with all lighthouses on the Great Lakes. This film will inform people about the history of the lighthouse, show you portions of its interior and aerial views that not even the visitors get to enjoy.

Don Terras, the Director of Lighthouse Park District, gives us a great history of why it was built at Grosse Point, what the lighthouse keepers did and more.

Because we are just one mile from the landmark, Grosse Point Lighthouse and its adjacent beach has been one of the locations we have used extensively for filming, from shooting the weather in every season, sunsets, moonrises and more, to testing equipment.

We hope you enjoy this short film about the Grosse Point Lighthouse.

Cheers,

Richard

Snow Storm in May?

With snow expected today I thought I post something from February to remind you it won’t be all that bad! Besides we won’t need to shovel since it will be 50’s on Sunday! So enjoy… you can watch a video of the shoot with this link: https://vimeo.com/329873301

Winter on the Great Lakes can be a fantastic opportunity to see the power and fascination of nature. Went back to Lighthouse Beach to shoot the Ice Island which had formed off the beach at sunrise to get the light shining through the ice sheets. Shot mostly video for The Sweetwater Seas documentary but took some time to shoot some still images as well.

Started at 6am in 9 degrees, at least there was no wind at all so it seemed warm with all the layers on! (Just had to watch where your breath went so it didn’t get in front of lens!) Spent about 2.5 hours out there. Enjoy!
